The Italy midfielder came third overall for the award produced by France Football following a productive year in which he won the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League with the Blues and the 2020 UEFA European Championship with the Azzurri.

Gleeson’s top three, meanwhile, consisted of Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi in third spot and Real Madrid centre-forward Karim Benzema in second, with Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski being his favoured pick to be crowned the winner of the award many felt he should have got his hands on last year.
In the end, however, after 180 journalists’ votes had been tallied, it was Messi who won a record seventh Ballon d’Or following a prolific year in which he won his first international title, the Copa America, and also finished as LaLiga’s top goalscorer for the 2020/21 campaign, among other feats.
